According to translation to Arabic news sources, there are ideas out there to purposely demolish Egypt's Great Pyramids. Allegedly, Egypt's Salafi party is the one who has come out with these plans, calling it bringing down the "symbols of paganism."
According to political publication FrontPage Magazine, Bahrain's "Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs" and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt's new president, Muhammad Morsi, to "destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not."
According to it, "this is a reference to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad’s companion, Amr bin al-As and his Arabian tribesmen, who invaded and conquered Egypt circa 641." Whether this is true or not, according to early Muslim writers, Amr bin al-As destroyed the great Library of Alexandria. But he didn't have a good way to destroy the pyramids.
However, with the technology today it's all possible. The pyramids could simply be concealed by covering them with wax. "Tourists would presumably see great blobs rather than the perfectly carved steps. " (Daily Mail, 2011)
I believe that most religious (be it whatever religion) and non-religious people alike, both from Egypt and around the world, agree that it would serve none other purpose than show the stupidity of the Egypt's government. And taking everything into account, I don't think it will ever happen. However, the sad thing is that it's not entirely implausible.
Taking a look at the topic from another point of view, also doesn't support bringing down the pyramids at all. Three million Egyptians depend on 14 million tourists visiting Egypt every year, those tourists account for 11 percent of Egypt's $218billion GDP.
What do you think, how likely are the pyramids to get waxed?
