Stupid political correctnessJournalist One of the latest examples of such stupidity is the case of "Manifest Destiny" t-shirts. What are we talking about exactly? Black and white t-shirts with "Manifest Destiny" printed across the chest. The shirt was sold as part of Gap's GQ collection. What happened? A petition was created on change.org and got more than 5000 followers. That's in addition to numerous emails to the company and facebook messages. All meant to express their outrage about the t-shirt. And, what was the problem exactly? The petition reads that "This article of clothing promotes a belief that has resulted in the mass genocide of indigenous people, and it serves to normalize oppression /.../ This shirt is marketed to teens and young adults, and it gives no context for the racism and inequality that persists in our society, to this day, as a result of this doctrine. We are asking that this shirt be discontinued, and that an apology be issued." And how is the phrase "Manifest Destiny" insulting? The phrase was first used by John O’Sullivan back in 1845 to justify U.S. expansion into the West, where settlers were sure that God had blessed their expansion over the whole nation. Okay. So if I say that by killing a person in war is an insult to god's commandment of "You shall not kill," I'm insulting god and everyone who are believing in it, and as such, should be punished by...hmm, death? Just thinking out loud here. I don't really think that wars are great or god was anything else than a lunatic shouting out his delusions, but how is that comparison any different than the one stated above?
