Alzheimer's is a disease none of us wishes for ourselves nor for anyone else we know. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, currently without any cure. With 26.6 million people suffering from the disease in 2006, it is estimated that by 2050 1 in 85 people will be affected. The exact cause not progression is still not well understood.
After the death of his grandmother who was also suffering from Alzheimer's, in 2009 Nelson Dellis created a charity called
Climb For Memory. The charity was created to raise both funds as well as awareness for the disease. He teamed up with Fusion-io and now the charity, for the sake of achieving its goals, is climbing the highest mountains around the globe.
This year the two-time Memory Champion Nelson Dellis is trying to conquer Mount Everest. During the climb he will have to take various memory-related tests and once he returns from the top, the scientists from the Washington University will be studying in the results.
The entire climbing process will also be documented, new blog posts will be created as well as challenges will be uploaded to www.fusionio.com/memorychallenge whenever Dellis reaches another base camp.
You can follow Dellis' progress as well as take the challenges at the previously mentioned website. He will be starting the climb soon, so be sure not to miss out!
